
When you think of spiritual awakening you may have a picture of a blissful transformation from your current self into a beautiful, awakened soul. Heck, that’s the image I had. A wonderful path to enlightenment, inner peace, and connection to the divine. Yet, when you go through the awakening process, it’s a mess and has you wondering why you even wanted to begin it.
That’s what many don’t really talk about. They avoid mentioning the chaotic, confusing and downright uncomfortable phases that come with the awakening. If you are on this path, you may have had moments in which you questioned everything – your sanity, life purpose, relationships, and even why you are here!
Rest assured these hidden phases are not only normal but essential for growth. They are the parts of spiritual awakening that challenge us to dig deep, confront our shadows and come out the other side stronger and wiser. Let me share with you the lesser-discussed phases of spiritual awakening – the ones that no one talks about but everyone experiences at some point.
The Phase of Profound Confusion
Spiritual awakening often begins with a sense that something isn’t quite right. You get an inkling that there is a piece of your life that feels out of kilter. You might feel a disconnect from your life or question everything you once believed in. It’s like waking up in a foggy dream where nothing makes sense anymore.
This phase can be unsettling because it shakes the very foundation of your identity and your beliefs. For me, leaving Christianity was like someone had ripped the carpet out from under my feet. 20+ years of my life came crumbling down around me. Inside, the fear and doubt hammered away at my conscience.
When you go through this part of awakening you find yourself asking existential questions such as “What’s the point of all this?” or “Who am I?” It’s common to feel lost and unsure about what’s happening to you.
Here are some ways that can help you navigate this stage of the process:
- Ground yourself: Spend time in nature or practice mindfulness to anchor yourself into the present moment.
- Be patient: Trust that confusion is part of the process and clarity will come in time.
- Seek guidance: Reach out to mentors, such as myself, and communities who can offer support during this stage of your awakening.
Resisting The Path
Once you realise you’re on the path, resistance can kick in. This is due to fear. Fear of change. Fear of losing control. Fear of stepping into the unknown. You might cling to old habits or relationships which no longer serve you because letting go feels too scary.
Resistance can manifest in subtle ways: procrastination, self-sabotage, or downright denial of what’s happening to you spiritually. What is happening is that your ego is fighting you because it doesn’t want to be dismantled – a natural reaction when one is faced with transformation.
I fought against my awakening because of what it would mean for me. A loss of friends, a complete walking away from what I had believed for so long. The fear of wondering if I made the right choice or not. Yet, in hindsight, I understood that resistance is part of the process. At first, you fight, you push back against what’s happening, but then you…accept it. You let go and flow with the awakening as it leads you along a winding path of self-discovery and enlightenment.
As you enter and go through this stage here are some tips to help you:
- Acknowledge your fears: Write them down or talk about them with someone you can trust.
- Take small steps: Spiritual awakening is a profound experience, and you may want to rush through it just so that you can emerge transformed with all the ugly moments of the process behind you. However, you cannot speed up the process. Take it one day at a time. Start with manageable changes rather than trying to overhaul your life all at once.
- Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself as you go through this stage. Things are going to be a little hard and your emotions can be all over the place, so the last thing you need to do is hammer yourself over what is happening.
Facing your shadows
Ah, shadow work – the phase of awakening when things get real. This is when you confront the parts of yourself that you’ve buried deep down: unresolved traumas, limiting beliefs, and insecurities. It’s a stage that is uncomfortable and often painful, but highly liberating.
Facing your shadows is essential for spiritual growth because it allows you to heal the emotional pain and release those things that no longer serve you. During this phase, you might experience emotional breakdowns or vivid dreams as your subconscious brings these issues to the surface.
For me, shadow work was the hardest part of my awakening. It forced me to confront childhood wounds that, for years, I had not wanted to face. Yet, shadow work freed me from repeated patterns that stemmed from childhood issues.
Here is how you can work through this stage of your awakening:
- Dive into shadow work: What? Jump head into the confusion, chaos and pain? Yes! Then you wade through it all, sifting and sorting out the hidden and repressed issues, traumas and emotions. Use guided meditations (which is a tool I began with in my first stages of awakening) to help you.
- Seek professional support: During my awakening, depression came, thick and heavy. I reached out and got counselling. It was one of the best things I ever did and sparked my love for psychology, introspection and mindfulness. Consider working with a therapist or energy healer if needed.
- Celebrate progress: Every step forward – no matter how small – is a victory. Celebrate it! Every day I rejoice in the little winds that I have along my journey.
Isolation and detachment
One hidden phase that often catches people off guard is isolation and detachment. Relationships you had are now being questioned or completely cut off. People who were friends comment about how “You have changed,” and it’s not usually a compliment when they say it! The cause of all this is a shift in your perspective due to your awakening.
You feel as though you are disconnected from friends, family, and even society itself. This phase can be lonely but also empowering because it gives you space to reflect on who you are without external influences.
When I went through this phase I did a lot of introspection, reading books, and seeking advice online through YouTube and forums. Yet, the most powerful option I tried was meditation which allowed me to get in touch with what many call the “authentic self”. That part of me that has always known who I was and showed me my true self. Since then it’s been a journey of allowing that “me” out.
How do you negotiate your way through this stage? This is what I did:
- Find a community: Look for groups either online or offline where people share their experiences. That way you know that you aren’t the only one going through this part of the awakening.
- Embrace solitude: Use your time alone as an opportunity for self-reflection and growth rather than seeing it as a negative. You will find that being alone, away from the noise of other people’s opinions and ideas, actually gives you the chance to truly listen to your heart and soul and follow their lead.
- Stay connected: Reach out to loved ones who support your journey – even if they don’t fully understand it.
The Dark Night of the Soul
I am going to be brutally honest with you all. If you thought doing shadow work was hard, going through the dark night of the soul is even more harsh. It’s one of the most challenging aspects of spiritual awakening.
Through this phase, you face a period of deep inner turmoil where everything feels bleak and meaningless. It is where my depressive episode originated because I felt lost and confused about where I should head with my life as well as who I was.
It can feel like you are lost in a pitch-black forest with no way out.
During this phase, you might experience intense emotions like despair or hopelessness ( I had both!) as your ego undergoes an “ego death”. While painful at first glance, this process does result in rebirth by stripping away illusions so that only truth remains.
When I went through my dark night of the soul, it felt like the ground beneath my feet had disappeared. Everything I thought I knew about myself and the world seemed to crumble. It was terrifying, but looking back, I realize it was also necessary. It cleared the way for a more authentic version of myself to emerge.
Here are some guidelines designed to aid you while going through the dark night of the soul:
- Remind yourself that darkness always precedes light. This phase, though difficult, is temporary and transformative.
- Practice self-care religiously! Nurture your mind, spirit and body with gentle activities such as walking in nature, meditation, or soothing aromatherapeutic baths.
- Keep a journal to track your thoughts and emotions. This can help process your experiences and help you identify patterns over time.
- Connect with others who have been through this stage. Their stories can offer hope and perspective when you need it most.
Remember, the dark night of the soul, while challenging, is often a precursor to significant spiritual breakthroughs. It’s the cocoon phase before the butterfly emerges—difficult, but ultimately transformative.
Embracing the Hidden Phases of Spiritual Awakening
Spiritual awakening is not a straight path to enlightenment; it’s a journey filled with twists, turns, and unexpected challenges. The hidden phases—confusion, resistance, shadow work, isolation, and even the dark night of the soul—are not signs that you’re doing something wrong. They’re essential parts of the process, helping you shed old layers, heal wounds, and step into your authentic self.

They may be messy and uncomfortable, but they’re also where the most profound growth happens.
