What if you were told that the person you desire to be, you already are? You just don’t know it. Be a bit of a surprise, huh? The truth is that you are the ultimate version of yourself. That “ideal you”.
If that’s the case, then how come you don’t feel like that person? Simply because we have allowed our self-image and self-belief to be influenced by others. As children, we have taken on board the opinions and cultural ideals of our parents and society.
We have…conformed.
Yet, the good news is that you can transform. You can get in touch with that inner you. That ideal you and have that life you long for. Let me show you how you can connect with that person, allowing it to come to the surface of your consciousness and remodel you into its image.
Uncovering your ego
Our self-identity is developed as we grow from babies to children, into teenagers and young adults. Through the process, we learn how to embrace those parts of us that others see as desirable and hide those aspects of ourselves that others tell us are bad. (Even though those “bad parts” may actually be healthy such as being competitive and confident or shy and cautious.)
Our caregivers determine which aspects of personality are good and to be developed and which ones are bad and discouraged. This is because our parents or those involved in our upbringing have their own ego issues that influence what they consider good and bad traits.
So we find that our personality is formed by those who are involved in our childhood. We are shaped and molded into “their” image of who we are supposed to be. It’s not only others’ opinions that form our self-identity, we also define who we are through our roles.
We are the good child or the bad child.
We are the good friend.
We are the best student.
We are the loyal partner or spouse.
We are the trusted employee.
But what happens when your role is taken away from you? How do you see and think about yourself when friendships drift apart? When you get a run of low scores on those school tests? When your marriage or romantic relationship ends? What about when you lose your job?
When the roles that we use to define ourselves fall apart, we find that we may face an existential crisis about who we really are. You are left questioning who you are as the role that you built your identity around has gone.
When we base our sense of “I” and “me” on outside situations, we open ourselves up to having the rug pulled out from under our egos.
Once that rug is gone, we find ourselves threatened and vulnerable. In comes the defense mechanisms
However, if we allow ourselves to let go of the defenses, we may start a journey of “soul-searching”. A process of rediscovering who we truly are. It’s a time of reflection and redefining yourself. You may experience a spiritual awakening through which you explore who you are, why you are here, and what is the meaning of your life.
You start to become self-aware of the authentic you that has always resided deep within you.
It’s like that “real” you pops up and says “Hi, I’m here!”
When you start such a journey, there will be dark times when you truly wonder if what you are doing is the right thing or not.
You will question and doubt yourself.
This is because you are challenging your ego, which has been in the driver’s seat for as long as you can remember. You find that your self-identity is stripped to a core and you are analyzing each piece and questioning whether that’s really you or someone else’s idea of who you should be.
As you connect with your authentic self (which is that part of you that is a portion of the divine and is connected to all things), it’s liberating. Your life takes on a whole new, exciting level and you start to feel fulfilled as you have a sense that you are on the right path.
But how do we get in touch with that deep part of our being?
Becoming you through meditation
Meditation allows us to access our subconsciousness and it is at this level we connect with our divine self. We bypass our conscious brain with all its noise and filters and touch that authentic part of our being that resides beyond our consciousness.
Psychologically, we get in touch with our shadow selves. The shadow self refers to those aspects of our personality that we were told and taught, by our parents and peers, are not desirable or socially unacceptable. So we lock them away within our subconscious.
Through meditation, we will find that those “bad” parts of us will come into our consciousness and then we have to deal with them. This is one way of increasing your self-awareness and deciding that it’s time to change who you are.
Sometimes, you might not feel you’re ready to deal with certain aspects of your past because it’s too traumatic or painful. That’s okay. Just let it go and address the situation when you are stronger.
When it comes to how our personalities are formed there are two different views within the world of psychology, Freud claimed that everyone is born as a clean slate (“tabula rasa”. That is, our personalities are formed as we grow. A concept that is said to be first introduced by Aristotle. Yet, not everyone agrees with this idea.
Carl Jung held the view that we all have innate instincts. That is, our personalities are already part of us when we enter this world. For Jung, this is a reflection of the universal consciousness to which we all have contributed since the first time man appeared on this planet. It is part of Jung’s concept of archetypes.
Another way of considering Jung’s view is that we all have a part of the divine consciousness residing within us.
To recap, when we are born, we possess a personality that is tainted by the opinions and ideas of those involved in our upbringing. Then we find that we struggle psychologically as we try to reconcile the “who we are meant to be” with that innate part of us that knows “who we truly are” (the divine piece of you).
Through meditation, we open ourselves up to access the divine aspect of our makeup and allow it to bloom within us. We identify with it and say “Yes, this is me.” You embrace your divine self and allow it to transform you into its image.
Here is a meditation that will get you started on the journey of connecting with your higher self:
An amazing new life
Once you get in touch with your higher self and deal with the junk that you have stored in your subconscious, you will find that your life becomes more exciting. The benefits of allowing your divine self to rise to the surface of your life are:
- You become more empathetic toward yourself and others.
- This world takes on a whole new dimension as you begin to notice things that previously you weren’t aware of.
- Relationships are strengthened.
- You become more empowered as you tap into divine strength.
- Abundance starts to follow you as you align yourself with your life’s true purpose.
- You feel more fulfilled in life.
and the ultimate benefit is that you have become aware of who you truly are.
Once you have a profound knowledge of your authentic self, then knockbacks in life (which will come) and people’s negative opinions won’t have the same effect on you as they once did.
You are free to discover yourself. That’s liberating!
